However, what I disliked most with PA was the game’s combat system, which is a common complaint amongst the negative reviews. Not sure why it has a cannon on its head though. This leads to backtracking and doing things rigidly, instead of allowing for more organic exploration and advancement in the game. In PA, the processing of events seems to be fixed and linear, so that a specific NPC has to be spoken to first to trigger another one’s dialogue option, which opens another possibility, and so on.
For instance, I’ve grown accustomed to chatting with every NPC I can a handful of times, happy to learn more about the surrounding area, relevant history, rumors going around, and potentially pick up a quest. However it’d be categorized isn’t of much concern to me, as it doesn’t change the experience, which on the surface level covers the checklist of things to include in a good game, but not in a well composed way. Personally, I see it as a platformer that emphasizes exploration, dungeon-crawling, and speaking with NPCs, which is what I expect out of most indie adventure titles. I'm so glad I can play this game.There appears to be some discrepancy on how people would describe PA, whether it is or isn’t a Metroidvania or if it’s more of a Zelda II kind of game. I kept clicking 'A' at first, but then I got it. The only thing I had a slight problem doing was using the gear ring, but I caught on quickly enough to what you are supposed to do, which is move the right side directional arrow/stick and then, with a tool or item, like 'Frog Legs', press down on the controller/stick. So far, the mechanics/controls of the game are easy to adapt to. The game mechanics are good, although I have not been able to cook the 'Mystery Meat' without failing(-.-), I have successfully cooked more than enough frog legs.
I love how certain NPC's, like the male guard, has such a funny dialogue. The level of detail and colors in the game are very colorful and help create a more real atmosphere to the game.
